The Department of Foreign Affairs, Ireland, in partnership with other Government Departments and State Agencies, designed, implemented and participated in Expo 2020. The total budget, managed by DFA, was €15.8 million between 2019 and 2022. The project contributed to the delivery of Global Ireland – Ireland’s Global Footprint to 2025 and aimed to advance Ireland’s economic interests, promote Ireland’s culture, heritage, arts, education opportunities, and facilitate the discussion of prominent global issues. Evaluating large-scale promotional events are inherently challenging, however, they are essential. In order to inform strategy, business planning and potential participation in large-scale public diplomacy and promotional events such as future Expos, as well as providing a mechanism for accountability, an independent evaluation of Ireland’s participation at Expo 2020 Dubai is planned.
